Our Mission

Since 1994, Lamplighter teams have been loving, serving, feeding, and discipling people in poverty-stricken regions of the world often isolated from the Gospel message. Faithful supporters and donors have partnered with Lamplighter to shine a beacon of hope in places like the Middle East, Mexico, and Uganda—inviting all who hunger to come be fed, loved, and embraced by the family of God. To God be the glory, for all He has done.

Our Missional Philosophy

Central to the mission of Lamplighter is the deep identification with Jesus, who came as a servant and instructs us,

“Whoever would be first among you must be servant of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.” Mark 10:44–45

The guiding principle Lamplighter missionaries use to reach hearts for Jesus is: serve first, and hearts will open. To this end, our organization establishes missional programs in areas with both a great need and in which there is an open door to sharing the Gospel message. Using mercy and humanitarian relief as a first step to sharing the Gospel and strengthening local believers in their faith, we see many hearts turn to Jesus.

“If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?” James 2:15–16

Get to know us

From our USA headquarters in Kansas City, executive directors Jim and Nancy Hester are able to fluidly manage international Lamplighter programs, train and pastor rising young missionaries, and gather short-term traveling teams for relief work and evangelism. In many nations, including Uganda, it is imperative to establish local workers as the leaders of our programs. In addition to the witness of these men and women on the frontline of preaching the Gospel to their communities, a clear benefit of this approach is economic growth brought to the community by employing local workers. For 24 years our teams have ministered to the prodigals, the forgotten, the lost, and the hidden. The heartbeat of our mission is to reach the most needy with the love of Jesus Christ.

In Northern Uganda, where 75% of people live on less than $2.00 a day, and many are HIV-positive, how do we teach of a good and loving God? The answer is simple: we don’t teach first. We serve first. Hearts cry for the hope of Jesus, but bodies first cry for food, shelter, water, and medicine. In serving these needs, Lamplighter missionaries shine bright with Jesus. In each region Lamplighter works, our mercy work prioritizes children and mothers. The future of any nation lies in the ability of her children to learn, rise, and lead. And so we join Jesus and say, let the little children come, for to them belongs the kingdom of Heaven.

Through meeting the physical needs of a hurting or hungry person, we have an invitation to speak of a good and loving God.
